Never Alone

Never Alone is a complex smart-companion system designed to help women walk alone at night without feeling alone.

The Brief

Design and development of a complex urban information system. The goal was to collect and integrate data from multiple sources (sensors, open data, municipal databases), analyze it, and deliver actionable insights to end users. The project included spatial data analysis, interactive visualization on live maps, and the use of APIs such as Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, and GIS tools.

The Problem & Research

To create a solution that truly meets user needs, I began by identifying the core problem and understanding the experience of women walking alone at night. I conducted in-depth interviews, mapped the user journey, and analyzed pain points to uncover the most critical moments. My goal was to understand not just what happens, but how it feels and translate those insights into a solution that builds confidence, control, and peace of mind throughout the journey.

“When I walk alone at night, I want to know that someone is aware of my route and can take action if I need help, so I can feel safe and in control.”

Insights and key takeaways from user interviews

From Insights to Concept

Building on the pain points revealed in the research, I expanded the scope from a single-user perspective to a comprehensive end-to-end solution. The system I designed connects three distinct profiles: the walker, the command center, and the field responder. Together, they form a complete safety ecosystem that supports the user from the moment she decides to leave home until she arrives at her destination. The goal was not only to reduce fear and loneliness but also to build a reliable safety network that provides continuous control, support, and real-time response.

The Design Language

In developing the design language, I aimed to create an experience that conveys security, stability, and peace of mind, while remaining warm and human. The system balances a clear, structured layout with a sense of approachability, helping users feel supported and in control throughout their journey. The color palette evokes calm and confidence, with clear highlights for moments of action and urgency. The typography maintains clarity and readability, adding a subtle emotional connection to the overall experience.

Sketches & Wireframes

After wrapping up the research, it was time to bring the insights to life. I started with simple wireframes to test the flow, feel the user journey in action, and make sure every piece connected into one clear system. Step by step, those rough sketches turned into polished screens that tell the story and feel like part of a cohesive design language.

The Final Experience

The final result is a smart, multi-layered system built around three profiles the Walker, the Control Center, and the Field Responder all working together as one coordinated unit. It provides continuous support from route planning to arrival, including real-time monitoring, live reporting, and immediate response in case of emergencies. To ensure full accessibility, the system is available as an iPhone app, a desktop website, and a dedicated iPad interface, creating a seamless and consistent experience across all touchpoints. The outcome is a complete safety network that gives users a sense of control, connection, and peace of mind throughout their journey.
